The need for carpet repair is very common and one of the most requested
services we get calls on at Linton's Carpet Cleaning in Vancouver.

While most people realize that carpet stretching is periodically needed,
there are many other types of carpet repairs that can be performed to
make your carpet look better - and last longer.

In this article, on carpet repairs we offer in Vancouver, Washington, we
are going to go over some of the most common carpet repairs we see on
a regular basis.

Common Carpet Repairs In Vancouver, Washington

Carpet Stretching - As we said earlier most people know that carpet
stretching is something they will need done at some point. No matter how
well the carpet was installed, there will come a time where the carpet just
"loosens" up. This is caused by either the the backing getting more relaxed, the carpet coming loose from the tackless strip, or the carpet not being properly installed in the first place.

If you have any type of wrinkles in your carpet it is important to deal with
them now. Not later. Wrinkles in your carpet NEVER get better on their own.
EVER. They need to be addressed and repaired as soon as possible. The good thing about carpet stretching is that a good professional carpet repair specialist in Vancouver can easily deal with about any carpet stretching that you might need done.

**One very important note here when it comes to properly stretching your carpet.**In almost every case you need to have the carpet stretched using a power stretcher. This is important because just using a knee kicker to stretch the carpet into place is usually not good enough, and does NOT hold up to well established PROPER carpet stretching guidelines.**

Many carpet cleaners that perform carpet stretching "cheat" by using just a
knee kicker. Knee-kicked carpet stretching will not get the carpet stretched to the proper tension, and chances of the carpet prematurely coming loose, or getting wrinkles in it again, are very high. Why pay to have a job performed improperly?

Knee-kickers are not bad for carpets, and they have their place in installation and re-stretching. But when carpet is stretched properly BOTH are used - not just the knee kicker. You can find out more about carpet installation guidelines here.

So make sure that your carpet is being stretched with a power stretcher.

Bonded Inserts: This type of repair, often called a carpet patch, can repair
a number of carpet repair issues. What is a bonded insert? Well to put it in
the simplest terms a bonded insert is when a piece of carpet, that matches the damaged carpet, replaces the damaged area. This new piece of carpet can be from a left over piece of the original carpet; or it could be a piece of carpet cut out from another carpeted area in your home, such as closet.

When bonded inserts are done correctly they are either 100% not noticeable or they are very close to being undectable. Bonded inserts can be about any size but are typical 3ft. by 3ft. or less. Bonded inserts are used to repair both large and small areas of damage such as color loss, burns, permanent stains, and things of this nature.

A good carpet repair specialist in Vancouver, Washington can perform bonded insert repairs to the point that the repair cannot be detected and the bonded insert last for years. However, a few words of caution. Bonded inserts can be tricky to perform and can come out horrible if you are using a carpet repair company that is not very good at them.

At Linton's Carpet Cleaning in Vancouver, Wa. we specialize in high quality bonded insert repairs.

Frayed Carpet Around Walls Or Openings: Most of the time this repair is needed because of pets, especially cats. The carpet near the walls or around doors is frayed and needs to be replaced. This is where bonded inserts can be a big help but there is one other way to repair this if the situation is right. The frayedcarpet can be removed and then the carpet stretched back into place. The main consideration for this type of repair is whether there is enough "loose" carpet available to remove the damaged piece and then be able to stretch the remaining carpet back onto the tackless strip or threshold. Frayed carpet around walls, doors, and thresholds is very common.

Burn Repairs: Most carpet is synthetic and if any type of really hot material
is dropped on them the fiber is going to melt. Sometimes the melting of the fiber is barely noticeable, sometimes it is quite obvious. In most cases the cause of the burn is from cigarettes. But we have also seen burns caused by irons, both clothing irons and curling irons.

When addressing a burn in your carpet the main consideration is how large the burn is. If the burn is small from a cigarette then just replacing some tufts, or rows of carpet, may be all that is needed.

If the burned area is large then a bonded insert is the way to go. Burn repairs, the smaller type, are fairly easy to repair if you hire a good carpet repair
specialist. In almost all cases smaller burn repairs cannot be detected and will last a long time.

Threshold Repairs: A theshold repair is usually when the carpet starts to separate from the threshold piece that is the transition from the carpet to another flooring surface. Sometimes it is just the carpet pulling loose from the transition piece and other times it is the carpet backing separating and also pulling away from the transition. This repair is very common and in most cases is pretty easy to repair if you get to it quickly. The biggest issue is if the primary and secondary backing separate. This leads to a more complicated repair and usually will cost you more.

Permanent Stains:  No matter how good the carpet cleaning company is there are stains in carpets that just will not come out with normal carpet stain procedures. In this case the there are two main ways to address permanent staining.

One is to take the color of the stain out of the carpet and color repair the carpet, which is a very viable way to go about removing permanent carpet stains. But in this article we are not going to cover color repair. The other way to deal with permanent stains in the carpet is to do a bonded insert repair. Yep, the bonded insert can really deal well with a number of issues.

**As a note**: Make sure the company you are hiring to clean your carpets in
Vancouver, Washington are experts in carpet stain removal. This is extremely important!

Over the last 18 years we have seen many stains in carpets, that our clients were told were permanent, that were actually not permanent at all. The problem was the company doing the cleaning didn't know how to remove them. It is very important to understand that a good carpet cleaning company is also VERY good at removing stains.

If you have any carpet stains that you need removed do not hesitate to call us at Linton's Carpet Cleaning. We will be happy to take a look at the stains and let you know what we can do.

So there you have it. These are the most common type of carpet repairs in Vancouver, Wa. that are requested. Carpet repairs serve two purposes:

1. They can turn a bad looking carpet into a good looking carpet.
2. They can extend the overall life of your carpet.

When you have carpet that needs to be stretched and you ignore it - you are now asking for much more serious problems down the road. Carpet delamination from wrinkles is fairly common and leads to a much more serious carpet repair (which we did not discuss here) or the replacement of the carpet.

Most carpet repairs are not that expensive if you deal with them at the beginning. It is like anything else though; if you wait and wait you usually end up having a bigger problem and paying more to have it fixed.
